The pick-up bit is 4 of INPUT, except with a joystick and bit 3 of CONTROL set, when it is taken from bit 5 -- as in Knight Lore (chk_pickup_drop), where a directional joystick uses down for a direction and keys set bit 5 instead. Pentagram's READ_CONTROLS never sets bit 5, so in that mode, which no menu choice selects, nothing could be picked up or put down.
